Our vision
In the DECIPHER project, we aim to contribute to the EU pandemic preparedness program by providing innovative and flexible solutions deployable on short-term upon pandemic threats identification. In this context, flexibility of an IVD infrastructure is key since the source of the next big pandemic cannot be fully predicted. Therefore, the DECIPHER project will use a multifaceted approach, combining quantitative molecular IVD tests with AI-based predictive disease modeling, next to assessing the socio-economic sustainability of this approach.
The DECIPHER project will focus on viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHF), i.e., Ebola virus and Lassa virus because these viruses are:
- Highly contagious with human-to-human transmissions
- Life-threatening, with high fatality rates
- Difficult to diagnose at an early stage at the POC
- Without effective drugs or vaccines
- Highly prevalent in low- and middle-income countries that represent reservoirs of several zoonotic diseases with pandemic potential
The interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach of the DECIPHER project aims to cover the whole value chain of a novel IVD patch from its engineering and material side until its validation with clinically relevant applications, complemented by data-driven epidemiological, sociological, economic and end-user analysis. For this reason, we expect that the DECIPHER impact will be cross-sectional, addressing different complementary growing markets; engaging with academic, industrial, and societal stakeholders; and addressing several EU policy priorities as well as WHO sustainable development goals:
- Helping to end the epidemics of neglected tropical diseases with novel IVD solutions (timely diagnosis at the POC is key to block the spread of VHF and preventing pandemic events)
- Ensuring universal access to quality essential healthcare services with a device for POC settings
- Development and training of the health workforce in developing countries as demonstrated by the inclusion of CNFRSR (Guinea), INRB (DRC), and MSF (with VHF projects in Nigeria) as field experts in VHF that will co-create knowledge and get access to the novel DECIPHER IVD solution
- Strengthening the capacity of all countries for early warning, risk reduction and management of national and global health risks by providing new tools for rapid medical decision making, crucial in the context of outbreaks and pandemic preparedness
- Empowering and promoting the social and economic inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin and religion, by including African partners in the decision-making process
